EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - June 8, 2007) - At approximately 2030 hours Thursday June 07, 2007, sixty-one (61) inmates at Edmonton Institution refused to return to their cells from the recreation yard. Negotiations took place, however inmates continued to refuse to return to their cells. Eventually eight (8) inmates did return, and as of 0610 hours Friday June 08, 2007 fifty-three (53) inmates remained in the recreation yard. By approximately 1130 hours, all inmates had been returned to their cells.

At this point there are no known precipitating factors for this incident.

The institution is secure and currently in lockdown status. It is expected that the institution will return to a modified institutional routine as deemed appropriate to manage the safety and security of staff and inmates. There are no staff injuries, nor any known inmate injuries. An assessment of any damage will occur at a later date.

Edmonton Institution is a maximum security facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in Edmonton, Alberta and currently houses a population of 230 male offenders.
