Cost-Cutting Bikers Warned About Essential Maintenance

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Aug. 19, 2009) - Potentially important bike maintenance could be being put off by bikers in an attempt to save money says Swinton, the UK's leading high street insurance retailer.

Swinton is warning bikers not to ignore or put off essential maintenance and repairs as this could lead to serious implications to their bike's safety and future motorbike insurance premiums if they remain unchecked.

The warning comes on the back of a recent survey of a 1000 Swinton motor insurance customers which revealed 78% had put off 'minor and cosmetic' repairs such as dents and scratches in the last twelve months with a further 22% admitting they would wait until their next MOT to discover the significance of 'uncharacteristic' engine noises and squeaks.

According to Swinton Bikes, the three most common maintenance procedures overlooked by bikers are:

- Failing to replace worn or damaged tyres. This is not only dangerous but illegal and can lead to a fine and even points added to a licence.

- Bikers riding with a chain that needs replacing. This can cause poor performance and increased fuel consumption. There is also a risk that the chain will come off the sprockets which can cause extensive damage to the bike.

- Failing to keep oil levels topped up. This can permanently damage a bike's engine, easily avoided by regular checks and top-ups.

Anthony Aronin, Head of Swinton Bike Insurance said: "The credit crunch and fuel prices have had a big impact of motorists recently and keeping a bike in tip-top condition could be far less of a priority than it was twelve months ago. However some people's cost cutting could cost them dear in the long run both in terms of a bigger maintenance bill and an increased risk of having an accident.

"We strongly advise all bikers to ensure their motorcycle is 100% safe and roadworthy at all times and we want to highlight that putting off even a small repair now could be a false economy longer term."
