Creating Jobs and Benefiting Science: Government of Canada Invests in Modernizing Federal Laboratory in Burnaby

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 4, 2009) - The Government of Canada is creating jobs and supporting research by delivering nearly $1 million dollars in funding to modernize the Canada Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) Burnaby Laboratory.

"This investment of almost $1 million will go toward updating and enhancing this facility. As a result, lab staff will have a modern work environment to carry out the important work they do," said Andrew Saxton, Member of Parliament for North Vancouver on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. "Canada's Economic Action Plan means more jobs and better science, not only for Burnaby but for the entire country."

Modernizing federal laboratories is one of many job-creating investments in the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The funding is part of a $250 million commitment to modernize laboratories across the country over the next two years. The funding will be used to renew these facilities while providing economic stimulus in regions across the country.

The CFIA's Burnaby Lab is a major food testing laboratory and one of the Agency's microbiology laboratories that test for organisms such as Listeria spp., Salmonella spp. and E. coli. The lab also performs testing for a wide range of food and marine toxins and food allergens. These labs are strategically located across the country in order to provide timely food safety analytical services. The need to access rapid testing results is particularly important during food safety investigations.
