Cross- Border Travel Tips From CAA North & East Ontario

Take Advantage of the Strong Canadian Dollar This Spring

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 15, 2010) - With the Canadian dollar reaching parity with the U.S. greenback last week, and all signs indicating that it will stay strong for some time, savvy-travelers are planning cross-border trips to take advantage of the savings. CAA North & East Ontario is committed to making travel as stress-free as possible, and as such have some handy tips for hassle-free cross-border travel.

  • First and foremost-remember to bring your passport! As of June 1st 2009, the final stages of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) were put into effect, requiring all Canadians citizens to present a valid passport when entering the U.S. at all land and marine ports.
  • To save on gas, remove all non-essential items from your trunk, as excess weight can greatly increase your vehicle's fuel consumption. Ensure that none of your gear is blocking your view of the road and drive slowly if you are carrying a lot more baggage than usual, as stopping times can be greatly increased by added weight.
  • When traveling to the U.S., remember to purchase travel medical insurance before you leave. The rates for CAA's Emergency Travel & Medical Insurance vary depending on your age and health but they are daily rates and surprisingly reasonable. It's certainly cheaper than the alternative, but you can't purchase it once you are on your trip. It's an inexpensive way to ensure peace of mind while vacationing.
