Custom House and the Western Union Foundation Contribute $45,000 to Habitat for Humanity

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Dec. 16, 2009) - Custom House, a Western Union company providing international payment solutions and foreign exchange risk management services, announced today a corporate donation of $45,000 to the Habitat for Humanity Global Village program on behalf of their clients worldwide.

"Our donation, in partnership with the Western Union Foundation, is intended to provide concrete support for families in need of essentials like shelter and a place to call home," said Peter Ciceri, President, Custom House, a Western Union Company. "We place great importance on our corporate social responsibility program and we are honored to make a gift to this important global charity on behalf of our clients this holiday season."

Luella Chavez D'Angelo, President, Western Union Foundation, said, "We recognize in these trying economic times how non-profit organizations like Habitat for Humanity rely on corporate giving as a means to fund their efforts in order to lift people out of poverty. By serving significant international initiatives like Habitat for Humanity's Global Village Program, we can help make an impact and empower individuals, families and communities through access to better economic opportunities."

Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat for Humanity builds and rehabilitates houses alongside homeowner partner families. In addition to monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of sweat equity into building their Habitat house and the houses of others. Habitat houses are then sold to partner families at no profit and financed with no-interest mortgages. In addition, the homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses for other families in need.

"It is through generous donations from Custom House and the Western Union Foundation that Habitat for Humanity is able to make headway in the fight for affordable housing. At this time of year especially, families need the warmth and comfort provided by their own home," said Stewart Hardacre, President and Chief Operating Officer of Habitat for Humanity Canada. "Custom House and Western Union are leading the way for other corporations to join our efforts to break the cycle of poverty and we greatly appreciate their support."
