DAREarts: Promenade Through Time 2006

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - May 29, 2006) - on Friday June 2nd at 7:00 pm, 145 DAREarts students from grades 4-8 will display their new-found talents at Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge St (at Heath).

This performance evening showcases the culmination of the last several months of special DAREarts classes, in which visual arts, music, drama, dance, architecture, literature and fashion throughout the centuries has been taught to the students in workshop settings.

DAREarts is a national, not-for-profit organization which stands for "Discipline, Action and Responsibility in Education through the arts". DAREarts' unique 5-year program works with 'at risk' 9-14 year olds from over 24 Toronto District area and inner city schools, empowering them to become leaders in their communities through education in the arts. The children explore world cultures of the past and present through activities in which they themselves paint, sculpt, sing, dance, compose, design, write, act and create, guided by over 125 leading arts professionals. Grade 4 children engage in the arts of the medieval period; Grade 5's the 17th & 18th c.; Grade 6's the 19th c.; Grade 7's the 20th c. and Grade 8's contemporary arts. The children gain leadership skills by returning to their schools and teaching their classmates what they have learned. For ten years, DAREarts has flourished in Toronto and is expanding across Canada, influencing 10,000 children yearly.

DAREarts' Toronto partners include Christ Church Deer Park, the National Ballet, the National Ballet Ballet School, Opera Atelier, Canadian Opera Company, The AGO, O.I.S.E., the ROM, the Bata Museum, SoulPepper, Textile Museum, St. Basil's Basilica, St. Matthew's, Sampramdaya Dance Creations and the Gardiner Museum. DAREarts students use these sites to engage in their various art activities.

Mentors include arts professionals from all disciplines: artist Charles Pachter, tenor Colin Ainsworth, violinist Moshe Hammer, musician Richard Marsella, with puppeteer David Hannan as Lead Teacher. These and other artistic stars will be performing along with the students on stage.

DAREarts sincerely thanks our generous supporters, without whom this much-needed program would not be possible: Lombard Insurance, CIBC, Guy Carpenter, BMO Financial Group, HKMB, and government sponsors Ontario Arts Council, The Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Ontario Arts Foundation.

"We really treasure DAREarts. You give kids opportunities to find out who they are and act on it." - Woody's mom
