DND/Public Notice: UXO, Cultural and Environmental Investigations Underway at Former Camp Ipperwash

IPPERWASH, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 21, 2008) - The Department of National Defence (DND), in consultation with the Kettle and Stony Point First Nation, has initiated an Unexploded Explosive Ordnance (UXO) survey, as well as environmental and cultural resource investigations, at the former Camp Ipperwash.

This project will provide DND with a clearer understanding of the extent of UXO and environmental contamination at the former Camp Ipperwash, and will be used to develop potential clean-up and land-return options.

XTECH Explosive Decontamination Incorporated is conducting the work, which is anticipated to continue through 2009. Measures have been taken to respect areas of cultural significance and species identified as Species at Risk.

When UXO is discovered, specialists will mitigate danger by safely disposing of ordnance through a controlled detonation. To ensure the safety of surrounding dwellings and roadways, an exclusion zone (the area affected by the blast and metal fragments) will be established around the item. If public dwellings or roadways fall within the exclusion zone, additional safety measures will be undertaken.

Roads at or near the former Camp Ipperwash may be closed periodically for short durations, and temporary evacuation of residents from homes that fall within exclusion zones may be required. Affected residents will be notified prior to the scheduled detonation. The Ontario Provincial Police will assist during the closure of public roadways and notification of evacuation requirements to local residents. Local area emergency support services such as fire fighting support will also be notified of the dates and timings of scheduled activities.

In most cases, all located UXO items will be destroyed on Friday mornings between the hours of 7:30 am and 12:00 pm. Only those items that pose an immediate danger to local residents will be destroyed outside this schedule. During destruction operations, XTECH personnel will be on site to advise the public about the duration and extent of any closure(s). These measures are necessary to ensure public safety. It is anticipated that the need for evacuations and/or road closures will be minimal.
