Dakota Fanning to Voice Title Character in LAIKA Entertainment's Animated Feature Film "Coraline"

PORTLAND, OR -- (MARKET WIRE) -- October 24, 2005 -- LAIKA, the new animation company owned by Philip H. Knight, today announced that Dakota Fanning ("Dreamer," "War of the Worlds," "Man on Fire") will voice the title character in LAIKA Entertainment's first full length animated feature, "CORALINE."

The acclaimed animation director Henry Selick ("Nightmare Before Christmas," "James and the Giant Peach") is writing and directing the film, which is based on the international bestselling novel by Neil Gaiman. Former 20th Century Fox Chairman and CEO Bill Mechanic and his Pandemonium Films will co-produce with LAIKA Entertainment. Mary Sandell is producer for LAIKA Entertainment.

Selick segues to "Coraline" after completing LAIKA Entertainment's first CG film effort, the short film "Moongirl," a charming fable which re-imagines lunar mythology. "Moongirl" recently won the Short Film Special Jury Prize at the prestigious Ottawa International Animation Festival.

In "Coraline," a young girl discovers an alternate version of her life after walking through a secret door in her new home. When this delightfully off-kilter, fantastical adventure turns dangerous and her counterfeit parents try to keep her forever, Coraline's resourcefulness, determination, and bravery reveal her heroism.

Ms. Fanning's credits include the current release, "Dreamer," "War of the Worlds," "Man on Fire," "Uptown Girls," and "Hide and Seek."

LAIKA is owned by Philip H. Knight, who is Chairman of the Board. LAIKA absorbed Vinton Studios, one of the foremost creators of character animation in the world, in July, 2005. LAIKA Entertainment was a production entity on "Tim Burton's Corpse Bride" and is in pre-production on the CG-animated feature film "Jack & Ben's Animated Adventure," an original idea from Jorgen Klubien, a veteran writer, storyboard artist, animation director, and designer, who joined the company earlier this year as a Director of Story. The CG family film, a tale of survival, brotherly love and grand adventure set in the animal kingdom, will be written and directed by Klubien, who counts "The Lion King," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc.," "A Bug's Life," and "Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas," among his credits.
