Dana Point Landscape Architecture Firm Wins Award for Its Green Office Practices

Summers Murphy Partners Wins Sustainable Reprographics Award From Orange County ASLA and ProRepro

TUSTIN, CA--(Marketwire - October 8, 2007) - Dana Point landscape architecture firm, Summers Murphy Partners, Inc., was presented with the Sustainable Reprographics Certification (SRC) Platinum Award for fulfilling a stringent program that earned it the distinction of a truly "green" company.

Angela Woodward, RLA, ASLA, outgoing president of the Orange County chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and ProRepro owners, Keath Lauderdale and Tom Kennedy, were on hand to present the award to Patrick C.M. Murphy, ASLA, and H. John Summers, ASLA, co-presidents of the 25-person firm.

"About a year ago, the Orange County chapter of the ASLA held a major meeting to urge our members to take steps to conserve the earth's resources," noted Woodward. "Summers Murphy Partners is among the first to take this directive to heart. They took pains to make significant changes in the way they do business in order to go green, and we are delighted to recognize their forward thinking."

Keath Lauderdale, co-owner of ProRepro, added, "SMP's staff was very meticulous about following the five-point Sustainable Reprographics Certification program, which includes waste reduction, access control -- both of which concern tracking exactly what gets printed and for whom -- education, recycling and using recycled papers, and installing in-house printing equipment that's sustainable. Plus, the mere fact of taking the printing equipment in-house saves fossil fuel and money -- the typical delivery charge by a traditional reprographics house is $31, and it puts another car on our congested roadways."

Over a five-month period, ProRepro picked up 1,100 pounds of paper, which it took to a recycling center. SMP was presented with an award and a check for twice the amount received for the poundage. In addition, ProRepro collects SMP's ink cartridges and donates them to a local church that uses the rebate money for scholarships to its preschool program.

"It doesn't surprise me that Pat Murphy plans to give the money directly to the Surfrider Foundation," said Lauderdale, acknowledging Murphy's well-known daily surf outings at the famed Trestles break.

Murphy stated, "Landscape architects are truly stewards of the land. Imagine the reusable resources that could be kept out of our landfills if every landscape design firm took a look at the big picture and did what it could to conserve. Like SMP, ProRepro wants to promote ecological responsibility, so they were ideal partners. Is there a major financial benefit to recycling or reusing products? Not really. But it's the right thing to do. We can look with pride at the conservation inroads we're making and we hope to inspire others to do the same."

Celebrating more than 35 years of professional, award-winning landscape architecture services throughout the Western United States, SMP Inc. has enjoyed consistent growth in clientele, award-winning projects and talented staff. Projects range from single-family homes and master-planned communities to commercial properties and golf courses.
