Delta Commences Drilling at Koninko Prospect, Mali

KAMLOOPS, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - May 17, 2006) - Delta Exploration Inc. (TSX VENTURE:DEV) ("Delta" or the "Company") is pleased to announce that drilling has begun on the company's 100% owned Koninko prospect in Mali, West Africa. Delta has contracted West African Drilling Services ("WADS") to complete over 2,500 metres of reverse circulation drilling in two fences of holes across the main anomaly to the south and one fence across the newly discovered northern anomaly.

The Koninko project comprises two licences, Koninko and Winzan, totalling 233 square kilometres, located 250 kilometres south of Bamako, the capital city of Mali. The project area is underlain by rocks of the Proterozoic Birimian Terrane, host to most of West Africa's gold mines, including Morila and Sadiola, both in Mali. Morila produced 651,110 ounces of gold in 2005 with resources of 34.07 million tonnes grading 2.84 grams per tonne gold (3.11 million contained ounces). Sadiola produced 459,000 ounces of gold in 2004 with total reserves plus resources at 61.4 million tonnes grading 2.9 grams per tonne gold (5.64 million contained ounces). Both mines are operated by AngloGold Ashanti.

Delta President, Jim Gillis, commented, "Delta has outlined very strong gold-in-soil anomalies discussed in the Company news of May 3rd, 2006. The southern west-northwest trending anomaly is over 4.5 km in length and 600 - 1000 metres wide. A further series of west-northwest anomalies almost 15 km long emerges some 2.5 km to the north. Delta is drilling both areas to test for large-scale low-grade, bulk mineable gold mineralization, similar to that of Sadiola and Morila."

Project manager Marc-Andre Boudreau heads the exploration team in Mali. Christopher Wild, P.Eng, Vice-President of exploration for Delta Exploration is the Company's qualified person.
