Donated Playground to Open Monday in North Market Park

NEW ULM, MN--(Marketwire - August 20, 2010) -  The New Ulm Parks & Recreation Department will cut the ribbon on its new North Market Park playground, provided at no cost by manufacturer BCI Burke. That's because Cheryl Kormann, assistant director of the New Ulm Parks & Recreation Department, won the grand prize in Burke's year-long Nucleus contest.

The playground will be installed Saturday, Aug. 21, in a "community build" with businesses and individuals pitching in.

"Winning this contest was such a blessing," Kormann said. "We've been trying for about five years to replace old and outdated playgrounds in our community, and here we win a brand new, cutting edge Nucleus play system."

The Nucleus play system, valued at more than $20,000, has more than 10 play events with a capacity for 57 children ages 5-12, according to Tim Ahern, chief executive officer of BCI Burke.

"We hosted this Nucleus Contest to get the word out about this new play system, but also to do some real good in communities across the country," Ahern said. "I'm glad that we could provide this opportunity for New Ulm."

BCI Burke's generosity has started a ripple effect of community involvement that will culminate at a 3M sponsored Community Build on Saturday, Aug. 21.

"We've had a tremendous community response to this playground, and the generosity of these companies is amazing. The 3M Foundation has even awarded the City of New Ulm an additional $10,000 for added components, playground surfacing, and an installation supervisor to work with their volunteers at the community build. Then we have both Subway and Happy Joe's graciously donating food," said Kormann.

"It's pretty amazing to see how one act of generosity leads to the next, and how our community has come together in enthusiasm over this gift," Kormann said. "When they awarded us this play system, BCI Burke got the ball rolling on some great things in our community."
