Donovan Creative: Spread the Words. Edmonton Public Library Gets a Fun and Fresh New Brand

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 22, 2010) -

One of Edmonton's oldest and most important institutions has a fun and fresh new brand thanks to local creative communications agency, DONOVAN, renowned for its award-winning work with Edmonton International Airport (EIA).

Earlier today, Edmonton Public Library (EPL) unveiled their dynamic new brand and advertising campaign, featuring the catchy tagline "Spread the words." And the community is already doing just that – on Facebook, Twitter, blogs and more. The word is out. EPL is looking better than ever.

"We are extremely proud to help the Edmonton Public Library start an exciting new chapter," says Michael Donovan, President of DONOVAN. "This new brand favourably positions EPL to engage the community like never before, and will help them tell the story of the incredible value and access they offer to Edmontonians year in and year out. We hope more and more people discover what is available for them at their public library - and spread the words. EPL has been phenomenal to work with. This has been a very exciting project for our team."

The process began with a complete re-brand of EPL in the fall of 2009, which led to the creative design of a variety of marketing and advertising components including: exterior boards, TV ads, T-shirts, brochures, stationery, signage, banners and, of course, the membership card.

EPL also wanted to show how they're bigger than just their buildings. A group where people connect with information ninjas (aka librarians) and connect online – anytime, anywhere. DONOVAN redeveloped and redesigned the EPL website, which gives users access to extensive databases and digital resources – valuable services many people weren't aware of.

Because of the lack of public awareness, EPL needed to reconnect with a significant group of Edmontonians; primarily adults aged 18 – 45. Research showed the majority of this target group view libraries as boring, out-of-touch institutions that are no longer relevant to their lives. DONOVAN's job was to equip EPL with a modern and fresh brand, as well as give them the essential marketing communication tools to transform its image from boring buildings to a hive of entertainment and information for people of all ages and interests.

"Today's EPL is so much more than just buildings filled with books," says Linda Cook, CEO of Edmonton Public Library. "Our new brand better reflects the depth and breadth of services we offer to our community in a fun and fresh way."

Developing the brand was an in-depth process that began with staff and stakeholder interviews, EPL member and non-member surveys, and market research. Putting in that groundwork led to the development of an engaging and relevant brand focused on the concept of sharing. A fresh look, modern logo and new brand promise – "Spread the words."
