ETS to Host Art Show and Brunch for Bonham Academy Students

More Than 100 Students, Parents and Teachers Expected to Attend

SAN ANTONIO, TX--(Marketwire - April 9, 2010) -   School art programs across the nation are often the first to go in the face of tight budgets, but one local SAISD academy program is getting a financial boost thanks to an award from Educational Testing Service in San Antonio.

More than 100 people, including 25 Bonham Academy art students, their families and teachers will attend a brunch on Saturday where they will receive a $1,000 contribution to their art program from ETS. In addition, the students' artwork will be displayed in ETS's offices for the foreseeable future.

"ETS in San Antonio is pleased to display the art work of the students of Bonham Academy," ETS Vice President and COO of K-12 Assessments George Powell says. "Displaying the students' work to all our staff and visitors reaffirms that we are here for the children. Everything we do here, our work, all of it is to improve their academic achievement."

Who: Bonham Academy art students

What: Art show and brunch including the presentation of a $1,000 contribution to the art program

When: Saturday, April 10
10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Where: ETS
10999 IH 10 West, Suite 400
San Antonio, TX 78230

ETS became interested in displaying children's art after moving to their present office location. The San Antonio office needed art for the hallways and art provided by local students was the logical choice. ETS staff contacted Bonham Academy to secure the artwork and offer a donation to the program which does not have regular funding. The classes are taught by volunteer instructors from the Art Center of San Antonio.

At Saturday's brunch and art show Maureen Gonima will speak on behalf of Friends of Bonham, an independent non-profit parent organization that raises money to support the arts and other activities at Bonham Academy. Jim LaVilla-Havelin, Director of Young Artists Programs, will speak on behalf of the Southwest School of Arts & Crafts which provides the weekly in-school art instruction at Bonham Academy. In addition, an ArtSmart Committee representative will also make a presentation. ArtSmart is also a parent-formed group that supports the Bonham Academy PTA.
