Ed Harris, CN executive vice-president, operations, announces retirement

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 30, 2007) - Ed Harris, CN executive vice-president, operations, today announced his retirement from the company effective Jan. 31, 2007.

Harris said: "My decision to retire wasn't easy. Railroading has been good to me - starting in railroading as a yard clerk, and capping my career as head of operations for the best railway in the world has been a dream come true.

"The 24/7 world of railroading is very demanding, and very fulfilling. I'll miss daily rail operations, but will be available on a consulting basis to CN from time to time. I know that I'll never forget the relationships I've developed with friends, fellow employees, peers, vendors, regulators, labour leaders and customers over 38 years in the industry, in both Canada and the United States."

E. Hunter Harrison, president and chief executive officer of CN, said: "Ed has played a key role in executing CN's precision railroading practices and making the company the most efficient carrier in the rail industry. On behalf of all employees, we wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement."

Harris was appointed CN executive vice-president, operations, in March 2005, following his promotion to senior vice-president, operations, in June 2003.

Harris was CN's chief transportation officer between 2001 and 2003. Prior to that, he was vice-president, Midwest Division, following CN's acquisition of Illinois Central Corporation (IC) in July 1999. Harris was vice-president, operations, for IC, a position he assumed in 1998 after a year's service as general manager, IC Northern Region. From 1994 to 1997, Harris had the same position on IC's Southern Region.

Harris joined IC in 1968 and held positions of increasing responsibility in communications, materials control, and transportation, and also served as acting executive director, labour relations, in 1992. His IC service was interrupted by a four-year tour of duty in the United States Marine Corps.

Harris holds a Bachelor of Science degree in management from the University of Illinois, Chicago.
