Elections Canada Releases Spending Limits for Candidates

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 24, 2007) - The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Marc Mayrand, today released the limits on election expenses for candidates in the by-elections of Monday, March 17, 2008, in the electoral districts of Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River (Saskatchewan), Toronto Centre (Ontario), Vancouver Quadra (British Columbia) and Willowdale (Ontario).

These limits are based on the number of names on the preliminary lists of electors, and calculated using a formula set out in the Canada Elections Act, which makes adjustments for sparsely populated ridings and those with lower-than-average populations.

The Act allows adjustments to these limits based on the revised lists of electors. The final election expenses limits for candidates will be released on or before Monday, March 10, 2008.

Federal by-elections will be held in Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River, Toronto Centre, Vancouver Quadra and Willowdale on Monday, March 17, 2008.
