Electrical Engineers Award OCE for Sparking Research/Industry Connections

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 28, 2007) - The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) recognized Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) for doing something engineers are famous for - building bridges.

At the IEEE's AGM in Ottawa last month, OCE was recognized for its success in building bridges between industry leaders and academics, leading to prosperous research and development relationships and accelerating the commercialization of Ottawa's technology industry.

"All awards and recognitions are valued and appreciated. However, to be recognized for the very core of our mandate - to be acknowledged for bringing industry and academia together is especially gratifying," said Mark Romoff, OCE's President and CEO. "Establishing such partnerships is crucial for the ongoing development of Ottawa's and Ontario's technology industry. This award will further inspire OCE to continue its efforts to play a pivotal role in seeing Ontario emerge as a global leader of innovation."

"Award winners are recognized not simply for their innovative technology approaches to 21st century business operations challenges, but just as importantly, for their significant contributions to the communities served by IEEE Canada," said Dr. Wahab Almuhtadi, an Algonquin College professor and Chair of the IEEE Ottawa Section. Almuhtadi nominated OCE for the award which was then approved by the IEEE Ottawa Section board.

Ron Killeen, OCE's Managing Director for the Centre of Excellence for Communications and Information Technology accepted the award on OCE's behalf. "We're making a difference in Ottawa by leading the innovation agenda," he said. "We're connecting researchers with industry leaders and bringing technology from Ottawa's university and college laboratories to the marketplace."
