Eli Lilly CEO, John Lechleiter, Discusses the Economics of Medical Innovation

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - January 7, 2010) - John C. Lechleiter, PhD, Chairman, President & CEO, Eli Lilly and Company, will deliver a keynote address, "Lifespans and Livelihoods: The Human Dimensions of Medical Innovation," to TOWN HALL Los Angeles on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

As head of a company that has staked its future on medical innovation, Lechleiter emphasizes the success, and continued potential, of new medicines to increase lifespans and address challenges such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease. "Medical innovation is also a strength of the US economy," he stated, "supporting millions of 21st century jobs, including substantial biosciences employment in the Los Angeles area."

"Humans are not only the beneficiaries of innovation, but the source, as well," Lechleiter said. "The seeds of innovation are in the human mind. We need policies that unleash human ingenuity -- including better K-12 math and science education, immigration laws that allow skilled scientists to work in the US, steady growth investment in basic research -- and a health care system that promotes and builds on innovation to deliver better care while reining in costs."

Eli Lilly and Company was founded in 1876, and is currently the 9th largest pharmaceutical company in the world. Its global employees number approximately 40,000, and its medicines are marketed in 143 countries. Lechleiter has served as chief executive officer of Lilly since April 2008 and as chairman since January 2009. He became president and chief operating officer of Lilly in 2005. Lechleiter first joined Lilly in 1979 as a senior organic chemist in process research and development and became head of that department in 1982. He earned his master's and doctorate degrees from Harvard University, where he studied as a National Science Foundation Fellow.
