Energate Launches Next Phase of its Demand Response Solution with Broadband Connectivity

Energate's Zip Connect™-enhanced technology enables full two-way connectivity for utilities via a secure broadband Internet connection

OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA--(Marketwire - Sept. 10, 2009) - Autovation 2009 - Energate, a leading provider of demand response and home energy management solutions for the utility industry, today announced the next phase of its Consumer Connected Demand Response(TM) (CCDR) platform solution.

Promoting a more configurable, future-proof demand-response solution, CCDR now includes multiple new features and added broadband connectivity, offering the ability to further engage consumers in smart energy programs and provide a flexible Demand Response (DR) platform for utilities and energy retailers.

A core component of the enhanced CCDR platform is the ZIP Connect(TM), a ZigBee to IP Bridge. Energate's ZIP Connect(TM) enables a two-way communications path to the home using a broadband Internet connection, and connects to other ZigBee Smart Energy compliant devices in the home. Now, consumers and utilities can both conveniently manage energy use and reduce peak demand.

The ZIP Connect provides secure access to the Internet, and in effect, provides customers with global access to managing their energy use. Key features include:

- Compact plug and play device

- Support for ZigBee Pro and the ZigBee Smart Energy Profile

- Can operate both as an energy services portal (ESP) and as a client to another ESP, such as a smart meter

- Bank Grade Certificate-based key exchange security with 128 bit encryption

- Proven, Over the Air (OTA) upgradeable firmware, supporting device upgrades on the ZigBee network.

- Convenient access to enhanced IP features such as consumer portals

"With broadband Internet access penetration approaching 50% across North America and regional penetration exceeding 80%, there are a significant number of homeowners who can participate in two-way Demand Response programs today," said Michael Delage, Vice President of Product Management at Energate. "Using the ZIP Connect, utilities can obtain DR benefits now, with an investment that is complementary to their AMI deployment and that will connect to the smart grid network once it is rolled out."

Production quantities of the Energate ZIP Connect are shipping now for 2009 fall pilots and deployments.

Energate will be demonstrating CCDR at Autovation 2009, in Denver, Colorado, in booth 711.
