Energy Ottawa Inc.: New Ottawa Facility Converts Landfill Gas to Green Energy

OTTAWA, ONTARIO --(CCNMatthews - Jan. 31, 2007) - A local green energy company is putting a by-product of decomposing garbage to good use in generating clean, renewable energy. PowerTrail Inc. completed the commissioning of a 5 megawatt (MW) Landfill Gas to Energy Facility at the City of Ottawa-owned Trail Road Landfill today. The facility will generate enough electricity to power up to 5,000 Ottawa homes.

Rosemarie T. Leclair, President and CEO of the Hydro Ottawa Group of Companies, said the project uses proven technology to turn landfill gas - a natural byproduct of the decomposition process - into a valuable resource, green electricity. "Previously, this gas was being burned off in a flare, with no additional value to area residents. Now it will be used to power Ottawa homes."

The City of Ottawa, which owns the landfill, will also benefit, saving $2 million in needed upgradesand repairs to the existing gas collection system at the site, and another $200,000 annually in operating and maintenance costs. The City will also receive a royalty payment estimated at $150,000 per year for the use of the gas by the generating plant.

"This is an innovative partnership that benefits our environment and saves Ottawa taxpayers money," stated Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien. "This facility is an important first step in long term value and a culture of excellence. I want to see a substantial portion of Ottawa's energy generated from the city's solid waste, and I congratulate everyone involved."

The plant will reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by preventing landfill gas from being released into the atmosphere, and by reducing the need for coal-fired electricity generation. The facility collects the gas through wells inserted into garbage mounds and uses it to power five internal combustion reciprocating engines, each linked to a 1 MW generator.

"This technology is clean, and it has been proven to work at hundreds of landfills worldwide," said Leclair. "We're proud to play a part in bringing this green energy solution to Ottawa."

PowerTrail Inc. is a partnership between Energy Ottawa Inc., an operating division of Hydro Ottawa Holding Inc., and Integrated Gas Recovery Services, Inc. (IGRS).
