Enersource and Rogers Communications Team Up to Provide Innovative Solution to Help Ontarians Take Control of Their Utility Bills

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO and TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 5, 2009) - Enersource and Rogers Communications Inc. (TSX:RCI.A)(TSX:RCI.B)(NYSE:RCI) announce that they are working together to install an IP based wireless network to support smart meters in homes and businesses in Mississauga. This joint effort will help to cut costs and increase operational efficiencies, as well as reduce environmental impact.

The Ontario government has mandated that by 2010, every home and small business must have a smart meter installed. Smart metering enables local utility companies to upgrade metering to record not only how much energy is used but also when it was used, allowing different electricity rates to be applied during different times of the day. This empowers the customer to observe and adjust electricity use during peak times and shift more use to off peak times when the cost of electricity is lower.

"Working with Rogers has enabled Enersource to develop a leading-edge progressive smart metering solution that is reliable, secure and cost-effective," said Enersource President and Chief Executive Officer Craig Fleming. "This wireless network is self-registering, self-healing, self-reporting and always online and this innovative solution will ensure that customers will receive timely, accurate and reliable "time of use" electricity consumption data."

A wireless smart meter is a device which monitors electricity usage in hourly time periods and can transmit that information from the electricity meter to the utility using wireless technology. Customers will then be able to observe how much electricity is being consumed during each period and more importantly, how much money it is costing, which will enable customers to control their energy costs by switching the time they do certain energy-using activities away from On-Peak to Off-Peak usage. The new meters will also eliminate the need for meter readers to drive to different areas of the city to read the meters, which will reduce the amount of greenhouse gases produced.

Currently Enersource has 307 collector meters in operation which collect data from the 137,000 operational smart meters already in service.

"Today, environmental matters are among the key issues we face, and we are committed to applying our culture of innovation to tackling the challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability," said John Boynton, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Rogers Wireless. "This is one example of how Rogers is working with our partners to bring Canadians innovative services and products."

The Ontario government's plan is to eventually provide all customers with access to their previous day's meter data by 8 a.m. the following day. With access to the previous day's meter data, customers will be able to make personal choices to change electricity usage patterns in order to take advantage of the Time-Of-Use (TOU) rates. TOU rates will be introduced in Mississauga in 2010.
