Enersource Wants Mississauga to Switch to CFLs for Earth Day

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 18, 2007) –

Attention News/Assignment Editors:

Enersource, in partnership with Loblaw Companies and in conjunction with the City of Mississauga Earth Days, today announced the launch of switch4earth™, a unique two-day event program that provides one free 4-pack of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) to each residence in the City of Mississauga.

As part of Enersource Hydro Mississauga's commitment to helping customers conserve electricity while also benefiting the environment, the switch4earth™ program is an evolution of Enersource's successful conservation events program. Since 2005, the utility has provided over 74,814 compact fluorescent lights, with a total yearly energy savings of over 7,800,000 kilowatt hours, which is enough electricity to power about 870 homes.

"We have timed this switch4earth™ program over the globally recognized Earth Day period to draw attention to efficient lighting alternatives," said Gunars Ceksters, President and CEO of Enersource Corporation. "Lighting forms a significant part of our demand for electricity globally, and we are proud to have the cooperation of both Loblaw Companies and the City of Mississauga as we demonstrate our shared sense of environmental stewardship in the Mississauga community and for Mother Earth."

"Loblaw Companies is committed to reducing our environmental footprint, as well as helping our customers make environmentally friendly purchasing decisions, to help ease the burden on our planet and protect our natural resources," says Elizabeth Margles, spokesperson, Loblaw Companies Ltd. "We know something must be done - and we are pleased to partner with Enersource to help Mississauga residents make a difference."

The switch4earth™ event runs Saturday, April 21 - Sunday, April 22nd. On April 21st, Mississauga residents can visit any Mississauga Loblaws or Real Canadian Superstore location between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to receive one free 4-pack of CFLs. On Earth Day, April 22, residents can join Enersource at the switch4earth™ celebration at Mississauga City Hall - Civic Square between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and receive their CFLs and meet Dora the Explorer live and enjoy other children's activities. The program is limited to one free 4-pack of CFLs per Mississauga household.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs, use up to 75 per cent less energy than incandescent bulbs. Enersource Hydro Mississauga distributes only well known, name brand CFLs and promotes proper use of these lights, reminding residents that CFLs should not be used in totally enclosed recessed fixtures, with dimmer switches, or in touch lamps with photocells or electronic timers.
