Enhanced Fort McMurray Recycling Depot officially opens

Fort McMurray, Alberta (October 16, 2006) — The enhanced Timberlea Recycling Depot was officially opened today, with Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) Mayor Melissa Blake, Brenda Erskine, Director of Community Relations with Suncor Energy and Andrea Donini, Waste Reduction Week Coordinator for Alberta, showing off the depot's new features. The opening also kicks off Alberta's 2006 Waste Reduction Week, Oct. 16-22.

The depot now sports large, new signage so recyclers can much more easily find the depot, and then quickly see where to deposit their recyclables in attractive new yellow and blue recycling bins. The new signs also offer basic recycling tips as well as a recycling hotline number, 743-7947, for questions about what or how to recycle.

"Recycling is a very effective way to keep material out of the landfill, extending the life of the landfill and improving the environment," said Mayor Blake. "With our recycling partner, Suncor Energy, we are enhancing our current recycling depots and planning for new ones to encourage even more Fort McMurray residents to recycle."

The enhanced Timberlea Recycling Depot reflects residents' feedback regarding features they want at recycling depots.

"Residents have told us they want their recycling depots to be more visible from the street, with easy to follow signs and instructions," said Suncor's Ms. Erskine. "They also want the depots to offer a safe and more pleasing environment that encourages more people to use the depots. The Timberlea Recycling Depot is now bright, clean and attractive, and I know residents will appreciate the improvements." Ms. Erskine added that the enhanced depots will help ensure the municipality gets top dollar for the recyclable materials it sells since the depots will help residents keep the materials clean, dry and sorted properly.

The Recycling Council of Alberta chose the Timberlea Recycling Depot opening to kick off Alberta's 2006 Waste Reduction Week because of its significance locally and provincially in enhancing recycling efforts.

"The regional municipality and Suncor are to be congratulated for ensuring recycling is a priority for the community," said Ms. Donini. "The public/private partnership is an enviable example of cooperation that will lead to significant improvements in the entire province's recycling efforts."

During Waste Reduction Week, recyclers at any of McMurray's recycling depots may be "caught in the act of recycling" and awarded a community prize for their efforts. For more information on recycling in Wood Buffalo, check out www.recycle-more.ca.
