FCAC Issues E-mail Fraud Warning

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2007) - The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) is warning Canadian financial institutions and consumers about a fraudulent "phishing" e-mail crafted to look like a message sent by the Agency.

Several Canadian financial institutions have received a fraudulent e-mail stating FCAC is investigating a complaint against their organization. The e-mail recipients are directed to click a link in the e-mail to view the status of the complaint.

These e-mails DO NOT originate from FCAC. They are fraudulent. Under no circumstances does FCAC contact financial institutions or consumers in this manner during its complaint-investigation process, or direct them to a link on its Web site.

FCAC is advising anyone who may have received such an e-mail to delete the e-mail immediately. Do NOT use the link provided in the e-mail or visit any website listed in the message as these sites contain harmful software.

Individuals should report suspect e-mails to Phonebusters, an anti-fraud call centre run by the Ontario Provincial Police and the RCMP. For information about fraud schemes, visit www.phonebusters.com, send an e-mail to info@phonebusters.com, or call 1-888-495-8501 (toll free).
