FINDING THE GENE RESPONSIBLE FOR KIDNEY FAILURE

Attention: Assignment Editor, Health/Medical Editor, Media Editor, News Editor, Photo Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO, MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - June 17, 2010) - Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is delighted to welcome Dr. Karl Skorecki from the Rambam Medical Center and Technion in Haifa, Israel, who will present important new research strongly linking a certain previously unsuspected gene to the increased risk of Kidney Failure in high-risk populations.

Persons of African heritage have a four-fold higher risk of Chronic Kidney Disease, and those of Hispanic heritage have a two-fold higher risk for this condition, which can lead to the need for dialysis or transplantation. Dr. Skorecki's team, together with other world class medical research scientists from England, the United States and Africa, have made this important advance, and will present their findings for the first time at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
