Fairfax Radiology First in Northern Virginia With Revolutionary CT: New Scanners Provide Higher Definition and Lower Radiation

FAIRFAX, VA--(Marketwire - October 21, 2009) - Fairfax Radiological Consultants, P.C. (FRC), the largest private radiology practice in the region, today announced the implementation of revolutionary CT scanners. These scanners provide up to 33 percent clearer images while reducing radiation exposure to patients by an average of 50 percent compared to prior generation scanners and are in all five FRC CT locations across Northern Virginia.

The Washington Post recently reported on the cumulative effects of radiation from CT scans and noted the number of scans performed in the U.S. has increased from 3 million in 1980 to 62 million in 2006. These findings reinforce the importance of the new, low-dose CT scans provided by Fairfax Radiological Consultants (FRC).

FRC is the first radiology practice to provide these revolutionary CT scans with higher definition images and lower radiation doses for patients in the Washington, D.C. region. There are only 29 organizations in the United States with this technology. Notably, others include the Mayo Clinic and The Mount Sinai Medical Center.

FRC acquired five advanced CT scanners -- one for each of its CT facilities in Northern Virginia -- so all its patients can now benefit from this superior technology. In 2008, the firm conducted 42,000 CT procedures in its outpatient facilities.

FRC has launched an awareness campaign to inform doctors and patients that this new technology is now available.

Quotes attributed to Dr. Marshall C. Mintz, president of FRC:

-- "These advanced, high-definition CT scanners are designed to help
doctors make more confident diagnoses while exposing patients to
approximately half the radiation dose of prior generation CT scanners."
-- "All patients will benefit from the reduced radiation exposure, but
this is especially important for pediatric patients, as well as patients
who require multiple CT scans and/or scans of areas sensitive to
    radiation."
-- "With clearer images, radiologists can see more, know more and
diagnose with greater certainty than ever before."
-- "Fairfax Radiology acquired the newest CT scanners to provide the
highest quality scans for its patients and referring physicians, in the
    safest environment."

Quotes attributed to Bill Allison, chief executive officer of FRC:

-- "We made this massive investment in new technology because it was the
right thing to do for our patients."
-- "FRC has always been at the forefront of innovation in radiology, and
the implementation of these higher definition, lower radiation dose GE
scanners reflect a continuation of that legacy."
-- "Referring physicians can be confident their patients will receive the
most detailed, low-dose scans available today at Fairfax Radiology."
-- "Our more than 70 physicians, specializing in everything from
neuroradiology to interventional radiology to musculoskeletal radiology,
can meet any CT imaging need. This new technology enables them to do so
    more easily."
