Federal Deadline for Recreational Boaters is Sept 15, 2009

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 1, 2009) - Federal law requires all operators of powered recreational boats to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card by September 15, 2009. Boaters caught without the card after September 15 will be subject to a fine of $250.00.

The Pleasure Craft Operator Card is available from BOATsmart! Canada - a boating education provider accredited by Transport Canada.

"Our website www.BoatSmartExam.com offers the official exam online. The site is open and ready to serve the 8 million Canadians who require an Operator Card. We're encouraging Canadians to get certified by this convenient and accessible method before the deadline", remarks Cameron Taylor, President of BOATsmart! Canada.

The official exam is accessible 24/7 online at www.BoatSmartExam.com. The web site offers free study material and free retries for those boaters who may not pass on the first attempt. "We recognize many boaters may not have taken an exam in more than 20 years", said Taylor, "that's why the BOATsmart! site offers free study material, practice exams and free retries. We want boaters to be educated and feel comfortable with the exam process."

The organization also offers a network of certified test locations across Canada. BOATsmart! Canada's Safe Boating Teams will also be visiting various locations across Canada in September offering the exam risk free. Community locations can be found online at www.BoatSmartExam.com or by calling BOATsmart! Canada's toll free Boating Safety Infoline at 1-877-792-3926, open 7 days per week.

Boaters must complete a 36 question written exam in order to obtain the card. A minimum passing grade of 75% is required. Topics on the exam include navigation rules, marker buoys, required safety equipment and emergency preparedness. Once obtained, the BOATsmart! Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is good for life.

The law applies to all recreational boaters who operate powered vessels. There are no exemptions for age or length of boat.

Boaters who have lost or misplaced their Operator Card can contact BOATsmart! Canada's Infoline at 1-877-792-392, open 7 days per week, to access the organization's national database and obtain a replacement card.

BOATsmart! is accredited by Transport Canada and is Canada's most recognized course provider. The organization's mission is to educate recreational boaters and promote the safe, enjoyable and environmentally friendly use of Canada's waterways.
