The conference theme is "Violence Against Transit Workers".

This conference brings together delegates from across the country, to share experiences, successes and failures of joint efforts between labour and management in addressing workplace violence, assaults on transit workers and security issues and to formulate organizational and industry-wide strategies to tackle these issues.

"The quality of Canadian workplaces is fundamental to the economic and social quality of life of citizens across the country," said Minister Blackburn. "Canada's New Government supports safe working conditions."

"Assaults against transit workers or passengers should be treated the same as assaults against airline personnel or passengers and subject to federal penalties," stated Robin West Canadian Director of the ATU.

Established in 1982, the ATU Canadian Council is the highest authority and voice in Canada for the Amalgamated Transit Union on all issues of Canadian interest including Legislation, Political, Educational, Health and Safety, Cultural and Social Welfare matters.

The ATU represents over 28,000 public transit and inter-city bus workers in Canada. Our membership is characterized by both its cultural diversity and the diversity of its professions including driving, maintenance, supervisory, security and sales. IN: LABOUR, TRANSPORT
