Fire Brigades Union: Funeral of Ewan Williamson-Firefighters From Across the UK Will Be in Attendance

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND--(Marketwire - July 22, 2009) - Roddy Robertson, FBU Scotland Executive Council member says he expects hundreds of firefighters from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England to be in attendance at the funeral of Lothian and Borders firefighter Ewan Williamson.

Roddy Robertson said: "Ewan's death in the line of duty has had a profound impact on his colleagues in Lothian and Borders fire service. It has also been deeply felt by his colleagues in fire brigades across the UK.

"We speak with different accents and different languages but we all know the risks and dangers of firefighting. It is that which binds us together during this awful time and our thoughts will be with Ewan's family and friends."

FBU General Secretary Matt Wrack said: "Ewan's death is not only the loss of a firefighter but a terrible loss to his family and colleagues. It is also a loss to the community which I know he served with professionalism and pride.

"His death has touched colleagues in other fire services across the UK and many will be in attendance at the funeral. In the fire service we think of ourselves as a family and we are united with Ewan's family in grief and sadness."

The long-standing tradition of the Fire Brigades Union is to observe a minute's silence at the first meeting held after the death of a firefighter. In central Birmingham on 21 July, 80 firefighters representing every fire brigade in the UK stood and observed a minute's silence.

Roddy Robertson, Matt Wrack and hundreds of FBU members will be attending the funeral.
