Fire Brigades Union: Scottish Pension Reform "Must Be Extended South of the Border"

Pensions for firefighters injured on duty need to be protected, says union

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - May 1, 2008) - The Scottish Government has moved today to protect the pension rights of Scottish firefighters injured in the line of duty, and FBU general secretary Matt Wrack called on the Westminster government to follow Scotland's example.

"It can't be right that English, Welsh and Northern Irish firefighters injured in the line of duty could be both denied access to an ill-health retirement pension and lose their jobs at the same time" said Matt Wrack.

"This decision will come as a relief to firefighters in Scotland, and I want to congratulate both the FBU Scottish officials and the Scottish government. It recognises that firefighters' work can be dangerous, and we have a duty to firefighters who are hurt.

"It is quite wrong for firefighters to have a different pension entitlement based on where they serve. Firefighters from Scotland have worked alongside firefighters from other parts of the UK, and should be protected by the same ill health pension provision."
