First Quarter Sudbury Starts Well Above Average

GREATER SUDBURY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 12, 2010) - Greater Sudbury preliminary single-detached housing starts jumped in March, confirming the early start to the building season, with twenty single-detached units starting, according to figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). The twenty in March, plus ten in the first two months of the year brings the first quarter total to 30 units, up from eight for the first quarter of 2009. The thirty units represent the best first quarter since at least 1997. For the quarter, total preliminary starts have nearly doubled compared to last year.

"Building activity got off to a strong start in the first quarter," observed Warren Philp, CMHC Northern Ontario Market Analyst for CMHC. "Milder than normal weather in March undoubtedly has contributed to the quick start to housing starts," added Philp.

In North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie, preliminary housing starts are also up over the first quarter of 2009, while Timmins has not yet witnessed its first housing start. Like Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay's single-detached home starts were higher than any first quarter since at least 1997.
