First Time Since 1994 Sitting US Ambassador to Japan Speaks in So Cal

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - January 10, 2008) - TOWN HALL Los Angeles and the Japan America Society of Southern California welcome The Honorable J. Thomas Schieffer, United States Ambassador to Japan, on Friday, January 18, 2008. Angelenos will have the opportunity to question Schieffer on his address, "Japan and United States' Strategic Interests in North East Asia."

On the future of Asia, Schieffer says, "Today, the three largest economies in the world are intertwined in Asia. The six largest militaries in the world touch in Asia. Fifty-five percent of the world's population lives in Asia. The great issues of our day -- terrorism, non-proliferation, poverty, energy and the environment are paramount in Asia. And the universal values of freedom, democracy and free markets are increasingly being sought by Asians as the pathways to Asia's future peace and prosperity. By any measure, Asia is on the rise and the roles America and Japan will play in Asia's future will be crucial."

Schieffer was sworn in as the 27th US Ambassador to Japan on April 1st 2005, and presented his credentials to the Emperor on April 11th 2005. He served as the US Ambassador to Australia from 2001 through 2005. Prior to his diplomatic service, Schieffer was elected to three terms in the Texas House of Representatives.

The program is co-presented with Japan America Society of Southern California, the West Coast's leading organization dedicated to Japan-United States affairs. The event is supported through the generosity of Union Bank of California whose mission is to invest proactively in the communities in which the Bank and its businesses operate, targeting resources to benefit low-to-moderate income populations.
