Fleet Bosses Warned Over Wheel Loss

FLINT, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 28, 2010) - Fleet insurance brokers Staveley Head have reacted to news from the Transport Research Laboratory of vehicle wheel loss, by warning fleet bosses to be vigilant in order to prevent accidents on the roads. According to research from the organisation, there were almost 400 instances of wheel loss from lorries in 2006. This has led Staveley Head to urge fleet transport managers to ensure that their vehicles are regularly maintained and checked.

In response to these statistics, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) have launched Wheel Security: a best practice guide, which highlights the tell tale signs for poorly secured wheels, as well industry best practice wheel maintenance. The guide has been written in collaboration with a number of leading industry bodies, including ATS Euromaster, IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers), the SOE (Society of Operations Engineers) and SITA UK Ltd.

Andy Mair, FTA's Head of Engineering Policy commented:

"Wheel security is a serious issue for all commercial vehicle operators and this comprehensive guide, which is aimed at both maintenance staff and drivers, will help reduce the risk of wheel loosening, or worse still, wheel loss."

Flintshire based Staveley Head provide fleet insurance to firms across the UK. A spokesperson for the firm commented:

"Vehicle safety has to be the primary concern of all fleet bosses. For this reason, we would advise all of our customers to observe the advice given by the FTA and to obtain a copy of the best practice guide in order to ensure that all of their vehicles are adequately maintained."
