Food Safety Study Grant Request Turned Down

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 20, 2010) - Toxin Alert Inc. (TSX VENTURE:TOX) was informed late yesterday that an application by Toxin Alert Inc., in conjunction with a national consumer advocate, a primary food producer, a major food processor, and a food industry association to conduct a Diagnostic Food Wrap Study would not be supported by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC). AAFC's reasoning was "as the product has already been developed and tested it is considered to be beyond the pre-commercialization phase."

This application for assistance was an early submission under the Developing Innovative Agricultural Products (DIAP) program in September of last year and on September 23 AAFC reported that "your application is under assessment for eligibility and completeness." On September 29, we were informed that "the proposed strategy you have submitted is a fit under DIAP." Since the submission met the requirements set forth in the DIAP program, it moved forward for detailed review. Naturally, we are puzzled by this change in circumstances.

Because of the fact that this lack of support is based upon a technicality having nothing to do with the primary and urgent objective of food safety, Toxin Alert Inc. and its partners are actively considering re-submitting the proposal under other Canadian and Ontario programs, because of our firm belief that this unique Canadian technology is of great value to protect the consuming public.
