Forerun Collaborates With Digital Pen Systems to Launch Forerun Chart With Digital Pen Technology™

Improves Emergency Department Care Delivery Without Any Workflow Impact

WALTHAM, MA--(Marketwire - June 23, 2010) -  Forerun, Inc. today announced an exclusive development and license agreement with Digital Pen Systems, Inc. to incorporate Anoto Digital Pen Functionality into its Forerun Chart with Digital Pen Technology™ system for hospital emergency departments (EDs).

Forerun is a clinically-focused healthcare IT company that builds and hosts custom-designed solutions to improve the patient experience, quality of care, and economics of emergency care for hospitals. Digital Pen Systems is a leading provider of digital pen and paper for transferring handwritten information into digital data.

No Impact on Physician Workflows, Improved Patient Satisfaction

Physician documentation, or charting workflows, in the ED have historically incorporated collection of patient data on paper forms at the patient's bedside, and after the completion of the care process. Obstacles to adoption of electronic documentation in the ED are many with the first being a significant drop in physician productivity. This inevitably occurs due to the time required for physicians to enter data into ED workstations using non-intuitive, rigid charting functionality that is characteristic of today's enterprise hospital information systems and electronic medical records (EMRs).

Forerun has partnered with Digital Pen Systems to address these challenges by incorporating Anoto Digital Pen Functionality into its Forerun Chart with Digital Pen Technology System. Following standard workflows, clinicians can collect a subset of patient data at the bedside on a standard paper form with a special pen and then place the pen in a pen dock. The data collected in writing is automatically uploaded to the patient's EMR. Physician face-to-face time with the patient is preserved while the electronic record requirement is met.

"The Forerun Chart with Digital Pen Technology is a next-generation EMR that allows for the real-time completion of a clinically rich electronic chart during the care process and as part of physician's natural workflow," explained Ken Wolfe, Forerun CEO.

A Synergistic Partnership

"After reviewing all of the available digital pen technology partners, it was clear that Digital Pen Systems had the greatest depth and experience with enterprise digital pen and paper solutions," said Ken Wolfe. "A critical component of a successful EMR for the ED is one that simultaneously enables increased patient time and decreased computing time for the physician. A majority of ED physicians continue to chart on paper and resist usage of the electronic documentation offered by their hospital because of the nearly twenty percent loss of clinical efficiency. The Forerun Chart with Digital Pen Technology preserves the natural clinical workflow of real-time bedside charting while delivering the benefits of an EMR including improved revenue cycle management and error reduction."

Jason Soulier, CEO of Digital Pen Systems, said, "The combination of Digital Pen Systems' tools and Forerun's application that seamlessly integrates with the hospital's clinical information systems, results in a highly effective bedside computing device. The Digital Pen Systems paper form has many of the critical fields pre-filled with data from patient registration and nursing triage activities. Once the form is completed by the physician using the digital pen, it is automatically uploaded into Forerun's Software as a Service (SaaS) platform application into a fully electronic patient chart for the ED physicians to review and complete. The marriage of these two technologies provides a much needed solution to documenting the delivery of emergency care services."
