Fortinet Protects 4,800+ Computers at College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University From Internet Attacks

Top Private Institutions Centralize Robust Security Deployment and Management With Fortinet Unified Threat Management Systems

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - October 15, 2007) - Fortinet® -- the pioneer and leading provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions -- today announced that the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University have deployed Fortinet's FortiGate™-3600A multi-threat security systems to provide firewall and intrusion prevention (IPS) for more than 4,800 computers located on the two campuses.

The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University are nationally recognized Catholic liberal arts colleges and ranked as two of the top three Catholic colleges in the United States. The campuses are located about six miles apart, yet their Catholic sponsorship allows them to share one academic program so students can attend classes on both campuses and use one common network.

Both institutions previously used a Juniper NetScreen firewall solution, but its inability to integrate IPS and antivirus capabilities triggered a search for an integrated solution. In addition to considering an upgrade to their NetScreen solution, the colleges also evaluated Symantec and Fortinet. Following this extensive evaluation, Saint Benedict and Saint John selected Fortinet for its ability to provide a scalable product suite that integrates firewall and intrusion prevention

Two FortiGate-3600As are deployed in active/active mode at Saint John's University and are helping protect four network zones: the faculty and staff network which includes servers, the student network, a network demilitarized zone (DMZ) and the Internet. Although all students have access to the network, they are only allowed to access email, network drives, and self-service applications. Faculty and staff also have access to email, in addition to class rosters, grades and other administrative applications.

The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University are also using ProCurve Networking by HP's (a Fortinet global alliance partner) ProCurve Manager for provisioning the campus backbone network.

"Having one appliance for three security functionalities has proven to be extremely beneficial for us -- especially with our small IT staff," said John Muggli, physical network/security manager at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University. "In addition, Fortinet's partnership with ProCurve Networking by HP is allowing us to flawlessly integrate network security with a reliable networking switch."

Fortinet's FortiGate systems are ASIC-accelerated security appliances that integrate essential security applications such as antivirus, firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention, Web filtering, anti-spam and traffic shaping. All FortiGate systems are kept up to date automatically by Fortinet's FortiGuard Network, which helps ensure protection against the most damaging, content-based threats from email and Web traffic such as viruses, worms, intrusions, other unwanted network traffic and more -- around the clock and around the world. FortiGate systems are centrally managed by Fortinet's FortiManager appliances which minimize the administrative effort required to deploy, configure, monitor and maintain the full range of network protection services provided by Fortinet products.

"As the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University have found, Fortinet uniquely meets the various security and management requirements demanded by universities," said Karl Soderlund, vice president of Americas sales and global alliances for Fortinet. "Wins like this further our solution penetration within the education market and show the great value of our partnership with ProCurve Networking by HP."
