Fortis appoints two new international Executive Committee members

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM--(Marketwire - October 11, 2007) -

Alain Deschênes - Chief Operating Officer, Camille Fohl - CEO Retail Banking

Karel De Boeck nominated as Vice Chairman to the Managing Board of ABN AMRO

Fortis has appointed Alain Deschênes and Camille Fohl members of the Executive Committee (ExCo), Fortis's highest managing body, with effect from 1 January 2008. Alain Deschênes, who has been Fortis's Chief Information Officer since February 2005, will become Chief Operating Officer (COO). Camille Fohl, CEO of Fortis Commercial Banking since 2005, will become CEO of Retail Banking. Karel de Boeck, current Chief Risk Officer, has been nominated as Vice Chairman to the Managing Board of ABN AMRO.

"We welcome Alain and Camille to the ExCo," says Fortis CEO Jean-Paul Votron. "They have both demonstrated a performance-driven, client-oriented and innovative approach towards their business and their international experience will definitely benefit our team." "I am also pleased to announce that one of our Exco members Karel de Boeck, currently our Chief Risk Officer, has been nominated to the Managing Board of ABN AMRO as Vice Chairman. He will be in charge of the transition process at ABN AMRO and, as such, will lead the Transitional Management Committee." Karel de Boeck's current responsibilities will be re-assigned in due course.

Alain Deschênes will succeed Herman Verwilst as COO, with responsibility for Technology, Operations & Process Services. This will allow Herman Verwilst to concentrate on the increased responsibilities and activities - given the present circumstances - of his position as deputy CEO, which include Human Resources, and as executive director of Fortis. Camille Fohl will take over from Jos Clijsters, who will leave Fortis on 31 December 2007.

Jos Clijsters (57) joined Generale Bank as a marketing specialist in 1981. In 1999 he was appointed General Manager Marketing for Individuals, Professionals and Small Enterprises with overall responsibility for all marketing in Belgium and for co-ordinating marketing activities elsewhere. He became General Manager of Retail Banking in Belgium and Country Manager of Fortis Bank in Belgium in 2002. Jos Clijsters has been responsible for all Fortis's retail banking activities since 28 January 2005.

"We owe Jos a good deal for what he has achieved for Fortis," comments Jean-Paul Votron. "His energy, his communication skills and his drive for ever better services have inspired and motivated so many colleagues over the years. Under Jos's leadership the retail banks in the Benelux countries have managed to really position themselves as customer-focused, quality banks. At the same time international retail activities have continued their expansion and are now serving customers in such large and promising markets as Turkey, Poland, Ireland and Germany. This is an ideal platform for future growth."

Jozef De Mey (64), will step down as Chief Investment Officer on 31 December 2007, but will continue to act as adviser to the CEO. He joined Fortis in 1990 as General Manager of Fortis International, a post he held until 1995 when he was appointed CEO of Fortis AG. Jozef De Mey has been a member of Fortis's Executive Committee since September 2000 and has been responsible for Insurance Belgium since 28 January 2005. He became Chief Investment Officer (CIO) in 2007. The CIO responsibilities will be re-assigned in due course.

"Jozef has been instrumental in enhancing all Fortis's insurance activities," says Jean-Paul Votron. 'His expertise and commercial sensitivity have contributed significantly to building our leadership position in the Belgian insurance market and allowed us to kick off the integration of insurance activities in Belgium. Internationally, Jozef opened the door to our insurance activities in Asia by negotiating several successful joint ventures. I will continue to count on his expert advice in his new role."

Alain Deschênes (48), a Canadian national, joined Fortis in 2005 as Chief Information Officer. He was appointed a member of the Fortis Bank Management Committee in 2006 and took on responsibility for Technology, Operations & Process Services in 2007. Prior to joining Fortis, he was Vice-President and Director at Boston Consulting Group in Paris and London, having previously worked for Alcatel as CIO, and for Group BNP Paribas as Deputy CIO in charge of IT Operations and Global Infrastructure. Alain Deschênes has a BSc in Computer Science from Université de Montréal and has completed the London Business School's Executive Management Development Programme.

Camille Fohl (51), a Luxembourg national, worked for Lux-Development, a Luxembourg company for international economic cooperation, before joining Banque Générale du Luxembourg in 1986. In 2000, he became a member of the management team of Fortis Bank Luxembourg and of the Fortis Commercial Banking management team, responsible for Commercial Banking in Luxembourg / Grande Région. He joined the Retail Banking management team in 2003, with responsibility for the retail network outside the Benelux countries. He was appointed CEO of Commercial Banking in 2005. Camille Fohl gained a Masters in Economics from the University of Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve) and has completed the Advanced Management Programme at INSEAD.

Karel De Boeck (58), a Belgian national, worked from 1976 to 1993 at Generale Bank, where he was appointed General Manager Retail Marketing in 1990. In 1993 he joined the ASLK-CGER Bank, where he was appointed Director/General Manager Marketing & Retail and Member of the Board of Directors. In November 1996 he became Chairman of the Management Committee of the ASLK-CGER Group. In July 1998 he also joined the Management Committee of the Generale Bank, and in June 1999 he became Managing Director of Fortis Bank, with responsibility for the Business Line "Medium-sized Enterprises & Corporate". In December 1999 he was appointed Chairman of the Belgian Banking Association. Karel De Boeck has been a member of Fortis's Executive Committee since 1 September 2000. Since 2007 he has been Chief Risk Officer. He has a Masters Degrees in Economics (1974) and Mechanical/Electronic Engineering from the Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven (1972).
