July 2009 marked the 40th anniversary of the railing and shipping of the first iron ore to be mined at what was then known as the Mt. Newman Project, in the Pilbara region in the northwest of Western Australia. That year, a total of 6.45 million tonnes of ore was mined and shipped from the Mt. Whaleback mine. The Mt.
