Four Oakville CAs Win ICAO Award of Distinction

Chartered Accountants recognize their best and brightest under 40

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 21, 2009) - Four Oakville Chartered Accountants are among eight province-wide to be recognized by the profession as up-and-coming talent with both laudable past achievements and a very bright future. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario's Award of Distinction honours those CAs who have made an early impact, bringing distinction to themselves and to their profession through leadership and achievement in their professional, community and/or personal lives.

Christopher J. Alexander became Chartered Accountant in 2005 and now works as a business valuator and litigation accountant at a boutique business valuation firm in Toronto. Prior to entering the field of business valuation, Christopher worked in the Assurance and Advisory group at Deloitte & Touche LLP. He has been a part-time instructor at the School of Business and Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University since 2006, and heavily involved in the training and coaching of new CAs. Christopher is a seminar leader and has been an examination marker at the School of Accountancy as well as an enthusiastic recruiter of new CA students for his employers.

Michael K. Banks qualified as a CA in 1997 and is a Partner with Horne LLP Chartered Accountants in Burlington, where his is a member of the firm's Management Committee and Quality Assurance Team. He has been a frequent guest on local cable TV fielding personal income tax questions. After several years on the Board, Michael is currently serving as Chair of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton, a charitable organization with a mandate to help at-risk youth. Michael teaches scuba diving and is a past coach of youth soccer. Michael was elected to the Institute's Council in 2009 and was also appointed to the Public Accounting Licensing Board.

Gary A. Chin is a partner in the Financial Services Industry practice with Ernst & Young LLP and is the firm's Asset Management sector leader for Canada. A CA since 1996, he also serves as a member of the Accounting Advisory Working Group of the Investment Funds Institute of Canada and, since 2007, as a member of the Auditing and Assurance Standards Board of the CICA. Active in his community, Gary serves the Canadian Mental Health Association of Halton as Chair of the Audit Committee and Vice Chair of the Board and, earlier this year, was elected to the Board of the Credit Valley Hospital.

Christie E. Henderson qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1998. In just four years under her leadership as Managing Partner at Oakville's Henderson Partners LLP, she has taken the firm from 10 staff members to 25 while almost tripling revenues. The firm was able to achieve that growth while also making Imagine Canada's Caring Company program's list as an organization that strongly supports charitable and non-profit organizations. Throughout this period of growth, Christie and the firm held true to their core values and to providing excellent client service while maintaining a positive work environment. Christie is also a published author noted for writing Taxes for Canadians for Dummies, first published in 2000 and updated annually ever since.

As the award is intended to honour younger CAs, the age of 40 years has been chosen as a cut-off. As a result, only those CAs born in 1969 or later were eligible for consideration for 2009.

The ICAO Award of Distinction recipients were chosen following a rigorous nomination and selection process which culminated in a secret-ballot vote of the Council. An Award Review Committee - comprised of five current and former Council members - first evaluated all nominations and made its recommendation on each nominee to assist Council members, who then made their own independent evaluation of the nominees. A two-thirds majority vote of the Council was required to elect a nominee.

The 2009 recipients of the ICAO Award of Distinction are listed alphabetically below, followed by their community (where residence and business localities differ, both are shown, in that order).
