Fragmentation Prevention: Necessary Part of Server Performance

BURBANK, CA--(Marketwire - June 21, 2010) -  There are many elements to keeping servers up and running at peak performance. First there is the hardware itself, and technology companies have spent countless millions of dollars in research to constantly make systems faster. This is especially important since file sizes and application complexity have done nothing but increase many times over the years; not only do companies expect faster computer performance, they expect that faster performance with constantly increasing workloads.

Then there is software optimization -- the operating system and applications. These must each be made to ideally function within the hardware parameters. Fortunately most software is "self-optimizing" in this regard and will require little tweaking to run on most systems.

There is one underlying element in server performance that sometimes gets ignored however, especially in today's world of high-tech innovative wonders such as SAN, NAS, RAID and virtualization. That element is file fragmentation. No matter the technology applied or how advanced it is, it still relies on the hard drive as its basic storage component. Hard drives store files the way they always have, and with today's large file sizes and the greatly increased number of files, fragmentation is more prevalent than ever.

Due to the high demands on today's systems, many enterprises have turned to Diskeeper® performance software to automatically keep computer performance at its maximum.

"I view Diskeeper as a necessary part of server performance," said Jeff W. Barnum, IT Director with the Central Florida Cancer Institute. "It just saves me time in server management and maintenance, and keeps the servers running very fast. We have 10 servers at the Cancer Center, all running Windows 2003."

Utilizing IntelliWrite technology, a new revolutionary breakthrough, Diskeeper 2010 intelligently writes files to the disk to prevent up to 95 percent of fragmentation from occurring. Coupled with Diskeeper superior defragmentation technology, Diskeeper delivers a complete performance solution for every Windows system at every site.

"Since I was able to get Diskeeper installed on all of our servers a couple of years ago, we have maintained the current versions and updates," said Barnum. "We have experienced no issues and great load and access times. As someone who came from another facility which did utilize Diskeeper, I frankly couldn't imagine not using it."

"I do consulting on the side in addition to my work as IT Director here at the Cancer Center," Barnum concluded. "I recommend Diskeeper even to my personal clients -- small businesses with as few as one server."
