The Fraser Institute: Media Advisory; Outstanding BC Elementary and Secondary Schools to Be Recognized at Annual Awards for Excellence

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Nov. 6, 2007) - The Fraser Institute will honour teachers, principals, and support staff from outstanding BC elementary and secondary schools at the 2007 Garfield Weston Awards for Excellence in Education, Thursday, November 8, at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

Nearly 300 educators from across the province are expected to attend, part of a record number of BC elementary and secondary schools participating in this year's awards which will be presented in two categories, each reflecting a different aspect of academic success.

Improvement in Academics - Elementary and Improvement in Academics - Secondary recognize schools that have experienced the fastest, most consistent improvement in their academic rating over the past five years. The winner in each category receives $3,000 and the two runners-up in each category receive $1,000.

Academic Achievement in Excess of Expectations, challenges the notion that only schools in rich neighborhoods do well. This award recognizes schools that ensure their students succeed regardless of their socioeconomic background. For the first time ever in this category, two winners will be selected; one for elementary and another for secondary. Each winner will receive $3,000. The runners-up will receive $1,000.
