Fraser Institute Student Video Contest Offers More Than $10,000 in Cash and Prizes

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 28, 2009) - The Fraser Institute is offering students an opportunity to showcase their knowledge of economics and filmmaking skills in the Fraser Institute's Student Video Contest.

With more than $10,000 in cash and electronics prizes, the contest asks post-secondary students worldwide to create a video (maximum three minutes) that answers the question What is the appropriate role of government in the economy?

Before filming, students must draft a concept paper (maximum one page) describing the content of the video, including story, outline, and timing. Videos may examine specific policy areas or consider a broader scope of government actions, including:

- What are the fundamental, or necessary, functions of government?

- What are the costs and benefits of different government actions?

- Can there be "too much of a good thing?" At what point do some activities harm, rather than help, the economy?

A panel of economists and filmmakers will judge the entries on originality, clear expression of ideas, production values (e.g., lighting, focus, sound, etc.), quality of story, understanding of the topic, and fulfillment of the concept paper. Judges include Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer, the filmmakers behind Not Evil Just Wrong, a feature-length documentary exposing the dangerous consequences of climate change hysteria and extreme environmentalism.

Completed videos must be posted on YouTube and comply with all YouTube and legal guidelines.

Winners will receive the following prizes:

1st Place: $2,000

2nd Place: $1,500

3rd Place: $750

Viewer's Choice: $750

Runners-up will receive handheld camcorders ($500 value).

The video with the highest star rating on December 15th, 2009 will win a cash prize of $750 and the title of "Viewer's Choice". In the event of a tie, the award will go to the video with the highest number of votes, so post your video as early as possible.
