Functional Technologies Corp.: Phyterra Yeast™ Launches Three New Hydrogen Sulfide-Reducing Strains

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA and VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Jan. 29, 2010) - Phyterra Yeast™, a unit of Functional Technologies Corp. (TSX VENTURE:FEB), today announced the launch of Sonoma M, Napa-V, and California White, three new additional strains of its proprietary hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-reducing wine yeast. The launch coincided with the company's participation at the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium, a key wine industry trade show, now being held in Sacramento, California.

"The reception at the show has been excellent and has again validated demand for our unique H2S-reducing solution from both wineries and yeast companies alike," said Garth Greenham, President & COO.

With the three new strains, Phyterra Yeast now offers a total of six H2S-reducing wine yeast strains, providing winemakers additional choice while ensuring they can avoid the sensory and spoilage problems that often occur from H2S through fermentation. Currently, a number of California wineries, including three of the top ten US wine companies (by volume), are undergoing "conviction" trials with Napa-M, Napa-S and California Red, the company's initial three H2S-reducing yeast strains, prior to commercial adoption.

Hydrogen sulfide, a gas naturally emitted during fermentation, possesses a distinct rotten-egg smell and is a well-recognized and widespread industry problem that has long plagued winemaking. Standard approaches to remove or reduce H2S from tainted wine can be expensive, time-consuming and negatively affect product quality. All Phyterra yeast strains lack the ability to form H2S during the fermentation phase, making them a robust preventative solution requiring no changes to existing production processes. Importantly, there are no negative impacts to the sensory attributes desired by the winemaker.
