We all likely have one. That old cell phone from years ago tucked away somewhere and now seems ancient compared to today's cellular technologies out there offering amazing features like touch-screen, QWERTY keyboards and 3G connectivity. However, there is good news: no matter the condition of the phone or carrier, it still has value. Future Shop, Canada's largest retailer and e-tailer of consumer electronics today announced the launch of Flip Your Phone, a recycling program that accepts cell phones - working or not - in exchange for gift cards or a planting of a tree as well as the safe retirement of the phone.

"With the holidays upon us, we're delighted to offer Canadians a socially-responsible way to retire their old cell phones and get something valuable in return," said Phil Johnston, Director of Cellular, Future Shop. "Even if the phone has water damage, a cracked screen or even a zero dollar value, we'll recycle it for free. In return, customers will receive a gift card or have a tree planted in their honour to say thanks for doing the right thing for our environment."

Canadians are invited to dig out their old cell phones of all shapes, sizes and working conditions and visit the Future Shop in their community. Once at the Cell Shop department, they should see an associate to determine the value of the phone. Utilizing the third party website of recycling partner, Flipswap, a value is determined and either a Future Shop gift card is awarded instantly or a tree is planted for phones with a zero dollar value. The gift cards are redeemable to get a fantastic deal on a new phone, or spent on any item in-store or on Futureshop.ca. All cell phone makes and models are accepted through the Flip Your Phone program.

"Flip Your Phone is clearly a win-win program all-around where our world benefits as does the customer," said Johnston. "We're proud to take back unused technology and recycle it in a responsible manner. And everyone appreciates a little extra cash this holiday - what better way to earn some by recycling your old cell phone."
