GM Canada Core Brand Retail Sales Up 98%

(Data is not adjusted for the difference in selling days; February 2010 and February 2009 both had 24 selling days)

OSHAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 2, 2010) - General Motors of Canada today posted strong retail sales performance for its four core brands - Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac – which increased 97.9 percent in February, reflecting strong customer acceptance for the company's newest vehicles.

"Driven by solid sales growth among our fresh line-up of fuel-efficient cars, cross-overs and trucks, we are very pleased with this continued strong sales performance - the third consecutive month, we've grown retail sales for our core brands", said Marc Comeau, GM of Canada's vice-president of sales, service and marketing.

Comeau added, "The Canadian-built Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain compact cross-overs continue to resonate with our customers, up a combined 250 percent, as did our award-winning family of fuel-efficient mid-size cross-overs – the Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave which were up a combined 113.6 percent. And the Chevrolet Malibu, which was recently named a Consumer's Digest Best Buy, continues to be a great success story in the mid-size car segment with sales up 43 percent in February.

February 2010 Retail Sales Highlights

  • Chevrolet car sales were up 72.9 percent for February:
    • Sales of the award-winning and fuel-efficient Chevrolet Malibu were up 43 percent.
    • The Oshawa-built Chevrolet Impala posted a double digit sales increase with sales up over 21 per cent and the plant has scheduled Saturday over-time through March to keep up with customer demand.
  • Chevrolet full-size pickups, the segment's most fuel-efficient trucks, were up 105 percent.
  • Total Buick retail sales were up 73.7 percent fuelled by the all new LaCrosse, which was up 75 percent versus the previous generation Allure.
  • The GMC line-up posted strong sales for the month, led by the all-new Canadian built GMC Terrain compact cross-over, up 208.7 percent and by the award-winning GMC Acadia midsize cross-over, up 116 percent.
  • Total Cadillac retail sales were up over 155 percent for the month of February. This was driven by strong SRX sales which were up 255 percent and CTS sales which were up 98.6 percent.

Total GM fleet and retail sales, including sales of core brand vehicles and wind down brands, were also up 20.5 percent for the month of February.
