GeoEngineers Gets Real-Time Collaboration, Faster Data Replication With Riverbed WDS

Steelhead Appliances Deploy Easily and Transparently, Without Changes to IT Infrastructure

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - January 7, 2008) - Riverbed Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: RVBD), the technology and market leader in wide-area data services (WDS), today announced that GeoEngineers has deployed Riverbed's Steelhead® appliances at 15 sites, including Anchorage, Ala., Seattle, Wash., Sacramento, Calif. and Springfield, Mo. GeoEngineers is using Steelhead appliances to overcome inefficient cross-team collaboration and network limitations. In addition, Riverbed's Steelhead appliances are allowing GeoEngineers to significantly reduce its data transfer times, in some instances from two hours down to 10 minutes.

Founded in 1980, GeoEngineers has successfully completed more than 25,000 projects worldwide for clients in the energy, transportation, water and natural resources, development and federal markets. The company's workforce often works on very large files -- hundreds of megabytes -- which they found difficult to share across the wide-area network (WAN). The amount of time spent transferring files, sometimes up to two hours, decreased employee productivity to the point that GeoEngineers instituted guidelines on file transfers for employees to ease some of the performance issues.

GeoEngineers needed to liberate their employees to collaborate in real-time across the WAN. Specifically, they needed to enable employees with different specialties to collaborate in near real-time from remote offices. At the same time, the company wanted to accelerate its file replication back to headquarters. "We were replicating our files from our branch offices to our EqualLogic ISCSI SAN using Microsoft DFS. The SAN provided us with cost effective, easy to manage, centralized storage, and DFS was a simple cost effective way to perform data replication. The challenge, however, was optimizing DFS over the WAN," said Courtenay Bernier, Information Technology manager at GeoEngineers.

GeoEngineers looked into WDS, resulting in an extensive review and evaluation process of alternatives from Riverbed®, F5 Networks, and several other vendors. According to GeoEngineers, it was able to provision three Steelhead evaluation devices and integrate them quickly into the network themselves. "Unlike other technologies that require significant changes to existing network infrastructures, the Steelhead appliances fit in easily and transparently. We didn't have to make any changes to our routers, switches, servers or clients' machines," said Bernier. "The results were pretty impressive. Data transfers were cut from hours down to minutes on the first transfer. With that type of speed, we knew that our staff would be able to collaborate in real-time. In addition to increasing employee productivity, the Steelhead appliance was optimizing WAN traffic. We've seen an increase up to four times in WAN capacity with no additional investment in actual physical capacity."

Since its deployment GeoEngineers has made changes to its application infrastructure. Riverbed enables these systems to run smoothly, which has greatly increased collaboration among teams. "Because Steelhead appliances accelerate a broad range of applications, we've seen a dramatic acceleration of application performance," concluded Bernier.
