Global Aid Network (GAiN) Loads Container With 1 Million Servings of Food Bound for Haiti

Global Aid Network (GAiN), the humanitarian division of Power to Change, is preparing a container packed with 1 million servings of food bound for Haiti. The container will be loaded at Fraser Valley Gleaners in Abbotsford, tomorrow at 12.30pm, by a team of volunteers.

Canadian representatives Bill Blaney and Aaron Rogers, landed in Port-au-Prince on Saturday morning to help our local partners in Haiti with disaster response.

"What you're seeing on the news isn't even close what the real devastation looks like," Blaney shares on the phone from Port-au-Prince. "People are bathing in buckets. They're using sheets, tarps, cardboard boxes, anything they can find to get privacy and relief from the sun. It's like the camps in Darfur."

Through a partnership with hundreds of churches in the country, this provides an opportunity for Haitians to care for Haitians. GAiN is helping local volunteers by providing them with emergency response kits to distribute and setting up medical clinics to provide relief to these fringe areas of the city. These clinics will also become the destination for the injured people that line the streets of Port-au-Prince with broken limbs and major lacerations that are waiting for help.

This will bring the total number of containers deployed by GAiN to twelve, two of which have already been distributed. Each container contains $100,000 (CAD) worth of food, water purification tablets, tents for temporary shelter, basic hygiene necessities and other emergency response provisions. The contents of this container have all been donated locally, however, each container costs $20,000 to ship and distribute.

We are in need of urgent financial contributions in order to respond to the needs of the Haitians. Without immediate food, water and medical supplies to treat the injured, many more will die. Donations can be made at www.powertochange.org or by phone at 1.800.563.1106 and will be eligible for the Canadian Government matching funds.

Global Aid Network is the humanitarian division of Power to Change, a Christian organization with 15 different ministries working in Canada and around the world. GAiN is dedicated to bringing hope and tangible help to the poor and the suffering.
