Global Healing and Partners In Health Collaborate to Send UCSF Anesthesiologist With Medical Volunteers to Haiti

Flight Landed in Port au Prince on 4 February, 2010

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - February 5, 2010) - Global Healing, a leading non-profit organization devoted to providing modern medical equipment, supplies and training to the developing world, and Partners In Health (PIH), have teamed up to send Elizabeth Donegan, M.D., anesthesiologist at UCSF Medical Center and health sciences associate clinical professor in the UCSF Department of Anesthesia, with a team of PIH medical volunteers to Haiti.

PIH was in need of an anesthesiologist to complete its medical team to provide relief on the ground in Haiti, so the organization contacted Global Healing for assistance. Global Healing recommended Dr. Donegan and offered to cover her domestic travel costs.

Dr. Donegan has experience setting up blood transfusion centers abroad, and she has worked in a volunteer capacity with Global Healing for several years by spearheading blood bank modernization and development programs in Moldova, Armenia and Dominica.

"Volunteers like Dr. Donegan are critical to the relief effort in Haiti and we are extremely grateful for her dedication and commitment at this time," said Cynthia Basso Eaton, President, Global Healing, Berkeley, Calif. "In addition, we are very happy to be teaming up with PIH and its group of physicians and medical volunteers who are so willing to help out in such a great capacity."

About PIH

Partners In Health (PIH), founded in 1987, is an international health care organization based in Boston that works in 12 countries to deliver quality health care to people and communities devastated by joint burdens of poverty and disease. PIH's work has three goals: to care for patients, to alleviate the root causes of disease, and to share lessons learned around the world. For more than 25 years, PIH has been providing vital health care services in Haiti's Central Plateau and Artibonite Valley. Working alongside the Ministry of Health to serve a catchment area of 1.2 million people, PIH has become one of the largest health care providers in the country. This strong foundation in the country of Haiti has allowed PIH to respond effectively to the earthquake by providing both health care and social support to the tens of thousands of people fleeing Port Au Prince and the already established PIH sites.
