The Government of Canada Announces the Appointment of a Full-Time Member to the Canada Industrial Relations Board

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 27, 2009) - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour, today announced the appointment of Mr. David Paul Olsen as a full-time member of the Canada Industrial Relations Board.

"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Olsen," said Minister Ambrose. "The Canada Industrial Relations Board will benefit from his knowledge and experience in labour, employment and human rights law."

Mr. Olsen has a Master's of Law from McGill University and over 35 years of experience in labour, employment and human rights law. He began his public service career in 1974 as Counsel for the Department of Justice. Since 1983, Mr. Olsen held progressively senior positions within the Canada Post Corporation, including Assistant General Counsel, where he had overall national responsibility for the legal practice.

Mr. Olsen is currently a sole practitioner in the area of labour, employment and human rights law. He is also a member of the Federal Employees on Federal Task Forces before the House of Commons, and Senate committees on reform of labour law, human rights law and pay equity. In addition, Mr. Olsen is the Chairperson of the Subcommittee on Labour Law for the Federally Regulated Employers in Transportation and Communications Organization.

The Canada Industrial Relations Board is an independent, representational, quasi-judicial tribunal responsible for the interpretation and administration of Part I (Industrial Relations) and certain provisions of Part II (Occupational Health and Safety) of the Canada Labour Code. The Board's mandate is to contribute to and promote effective industrial relations in any work, undertaking or business that falls within the authority of the Parliament of Canada.
