Government of Canada Announces Job Creating Investment in Picton Harbour Reconstruction

PICTON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 10, 2010) - Daryl Kramp, Member of Parliament for Prince Edward-Hastings, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government and the Corporation of the County of Prince Edward have reached an agreement for the reconstruction and transfer of the Picton harbour facility.

"The County has clearly demonstrated an interest in managing and developing the area's waterfront assets for the benefit of the community," said Mr. Kramp. "The reconstruction and transfer of the harbour facility will create local jobs, while ensuring that the County is able to continue with this focus for years to come."

The project will involve reinforcing the existing timber crib shoreline wall structure which has deteriorated over the years. A new steel bin wharf and timber deck structure will be constructed in front of the existing wall structure. The project will also include improvements to the electrical and water systems and the installation of safety ladders.

The project will be completed through a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Canada and the County of Prince Edward. Under this agreement, the Government of Canada will provide approximately $550,000 and the County will administer the work, which will be completed by the end of March 2010.

This project is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Small Craft Harbours Branch, under the Recreational Harbour Divestiture Program. Once the work is completed, the harbour facility will be transferred to the County of Prince Edward.
