Government of Canada Grants $1,066,000 in Funding to the Agence interregionale de developpement des technologies de l'information et des communications to Improve Access to Broadband Services

SAGUENAY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - April 23, 2010) - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced that the Agence interrégionale de développement des technologies de l'information et des communications (Aide-TIC) has been awarded $1,066,000 in non-repayable funding through the Community Diversification program to ensure broadband access to more than 600 businesses, socioeconomic stakeholders and self-employed workers in 22 communities of the Fjord-du-Saguenay and Haute-Côte-Nord regional county municipalities (RCMs).

The project to be carried out by Aide-TIC, an organization created at the initiative of the Fjord and Haute-Côte-Nord community futures development corporations, involves the acquisition and installation of 13 transmission towers and three signal repeaters, as well as the implementation of wireless technology for mobile telephone service. Necessitating an overall investment of $5,150,000, this new communications infrastructure will serve the economic, education and health care sectors, among others.

"It is a known fact that high-speed internet plays a determining role in business competitiveness and growth. By extending network access to a greater number of Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean communities, the Agence interrégionale de développement des technologies de l'information et des communications is encouraging the development of e-business and, in so doing, is furthering the diversification of a regional economy still heavily reliant on the forest industry. Ecotourism is one of the sectors flagged as a priority for the region's economic development that is sure to benefit significantly from this new technology. Canada Economic Development believes in the importance of investing in projects as promising as this one," explained the Minister of State.

The Community Diversification program was introduced to help the regions of Quebec maintain and develop their economic base by supporting communities in their efforts to stimulate entrepreneurship and create viable employment.
